SPC flooring has moved from a trade conversation into mainstream home renovation in a remarkably short period of time. Walk into any flooring showroom in the UK and it will occupy a significant amount of floor space. Browse renovation forums and it comes up constantly, often described as the thing people wish they had used instead of whatever they ended up choosing. So what actually is SPC flooring, why has it gained such a following, and is it the right choice for your project?

What SPC Actually Stands For — and Why It Matters

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite (sometimes also called Stone Polymer Composite). It refers to the core construction of the flooring plank rather than its surface. The core is manufactured from a mixture of limestone powder and PVC stabilisers, compressed under high pressure to produce a rigid, dense, dimensionally stable board.

That core composition is what distinguishes SPC from its predecessor, LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile). LVT has a flexible PVC core that performs well in many situations but has limited tolerance for temperature fluctuation and can feel slightly soft underfoot. SPC's rigid stone-composite core addresses both of those characteristics — it does not expand and contract significantly with temperature, and it produces a firmer, more floor-like feel underfoot.

In practice, this makes SPC one of the more adaptable flooring options currently available for domestic use in the UK.

The Structure of an SPC Plank

Understanding how SPC is built helps explain why it behaves the way it does. A standard SPC plank has four layers. The bottom layer is an attached underlay — usually IXPE foam — that acts as a sound buffer and provides slight cushioning underfoot. Above that sits the rigid stone composite core, which gives the plank its structural integrity and dimensional stability. On top of the core is a photographic design layer, which determines the visual appearance of the floor: the wood grain, stone effect, or whatever finish has been chosen. Finally, a transparent wear layer sits over the design layer, protecting it from scratching, scuffing, and everyday surface wear.

It is worth paying attention to wear layer thickness when comparing products. Most domestic-grade SPC flooring carries a wear layer of between 0.3mm and 0.5mm. For moderate residential use, 0.3mm is adequate. For busier areas — a family kitchen, a hallway with regular foot traffic, a home with pets — 0.5mm provides noticeably better longevity.

How SPC Compares to Laminate

Laminate flooring and SPC flooring serve a similar market and are often compared directly. Both offer a wood-effect finish at a reasonable price point. But they differ in one fundamental respect: waterproofing.

Laminate flooring has a high-density fibreboard core. HDF is wood-based, and while it is treated to improve moisture resistance, it is not waterproof. A significant spill, a persistent leak, or a high-humidity environment will cause laminate to swell, buckle, or delaminate over time. This limits its use in kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms, and ground-floor spaces where moisture ingress is a realistic concern.

SPC, by contrast, is genuinely waterproof. The stone composite core does not absorb water, and the wear layer provides a sealed surface that repels moisture. This means SPC can be used in bathrooms, kitchens, and utility rooms without concern — applications where laminate carries real risk. In the UK, where older housing stock frequently has damp or ground floor moisture issues, this is a practical consideration rather than a theoretical one.

Where SPC Works Well

SPC flooring is suitable across most domestic rooms, but it particularly earns its place in certain applications.

Kitchens are an obvious fit. The combination of waterproofing, easy cleaning, and hard-wearing surface addresses the specific demands of a kitchen floor: spills, dropped items, chair legs dragging across the surface, and sustained use without much fuss. SPC holds up well in all of these conditions.

Bathrooms are another strong use case, particularly where a hard floor is preferred over tiles. SPC installs faster than tiles, has fewer grout lines to maintain, and feels warmer underfoot — a meaningful consideration in a room where bare feet are the norm.

Open-plan living spaces benefit from SPC's dimensional stability. In rooms with underfloor heating, or rooms that experience significant temperature variation due to sunlight or poor insulation, a floor that does not move with temperature changes is considerably easier to live with than one that does. Large open-plan kitchens and living areas are among the most demanding environments for flooring, and SPC handles them well.

Underfloor Heating Compatibility

Most SPC flooring products are compatible with underfloor heating systems, both electric mat and water-fed. This is one of the areas where SPC has a meaningful advantage over laminate, which is more restrictive in its tolerance for heated substrates.

The key factor to check is the maximum surface temperature rating, which is typically listed in the product's technical specification. Most SPC flooring is rated to a maximum substrate temperature of 27°C, which is sufficient for standard domestic underfloor heating use. If the product you are considering does not specify this clearly, it is worth confirming with the supplier before purchasing.

Installation: What to Know Before You Start

SPC flooring uses a click-lock installation system — planks connect to one another without adhesive, floating over the existing subfloor. This makes it accessible for competent DIY installers and significantly faster to lay than alternatives such as tiles or glue-down vinyl.

The subfloor does need to be flat and dry. SPC's rigid core means it does not flex to accommodate an uneven surface the way LVT might; any significant deviation in the subfloor will telegraph through the finished floor and may cause click joints to fail over time. The general guidance is a maximum deviation of 3mm over 1.8 metres. Grinding down high spots or filling low spots before installation is worthwhile and protects the end result.

Expansion gaps around the perimeter of the room are required to allow for the minimal but real movement the floor will experience. For most residential installations, a 10mm gap is appropriate.

Choosing a Finish

SPC flooring is most commonly available in wood-effect finishes, which range from light blonde and warm oak tones through to mid-grey and deep charcoal expressions. The photographic design layer technology in current products is sophisticated enough that the difference between a well-made SPC plank and the real timber it replicates is not immediately apparent at a glance.

Lighter finishes — pale oaks, natural blondes — tend to make rooms feel larger and more open, and work well in rooms with limited natural light. Darker finishes — grey oaks, anthracites — create a more grounded, contemporary feel and suit modern architectural interiors. Warmer mid-tones work in almost any interior and are the most versatile choice for those who are uncertain.
